7 Compelling Reasons Why A Prepaid Debit Card May Be Just The Financial Tool You Need

Prepaid debit cards are great financial tools and may be just the financial tool you need. Here a seven compelling reasons why:

1. A prepaid debit card helps you stay out of debt because the money you spend is your own. Credit cards encourage you to spend money you don’t have, thereby giving you a false sense of reality. In truth, by using a credit card what you’re doing is borrowing money from someone else (your card provider) to purchase the things you want. However, with a prepaid debit card the money you spend is your own.

2. Prepaid debit cards helps you control your spending habits, because in most cases you cannot spend over the amount you have in your account.

3. A Debit card can be the perfect way to pay your freelancer if you are a small business owner. Simply issue your freelancer a card and load funds onto the card whenever you want to pay them for a completed project.

4. You can use a prepaid debit card to send money to your loved ones abroad or to your college age children away at school. Some debit cards allow you to have two cards for one account and in this case you will be able to keep one for yourself and send the second to your loved one. Once they have received their card you can loaded funds to your account and call the other person to tell them how much money they can access from the nearest ATM or POS merchant. Their money is instantly available worldwide. It’s a cheaper and faster alternative to expensive money transfer companies.

5. Prepaid debit cards are a safer way for employees to receive their salaries. Statistics indicate that in the United States over 3 million payroll checks are stolen each year. However, with the use of direct deposit combined with a payroll debit card, there is no worry of that ever happening. Also, through the use of direct deposit and a payroll debit card, you will have immediate access to your wages, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year - no matter what part of the world you’re in. You will also save time by having your salary deposited to your payroll debit card - no more standing on long lines each pay period in the bank to cash your check.

6. A debit card is a convenient and affordable solution for the unbanked. Over 10 million households in the United States alone do not have bank accounts. In cases like these debit cards can serve as bank accounts. They can be used to access cash or make purchases at merchants such as gas stations, grocery stores or convenience stores. Additionally, debit cards can be just as useful as regular Mastercards or Visas because in many cases they can be used to purchase goods and services not only in shops but on the internet, and via mail order and to withdraw cash at home and abroad from ATMs (cash dispensers).

7. Prepaid debit cards are easier to apply for than credit cards. Often, they require no bank account, no employment verification, no credit checks and no security deposit. If you’ve been turned down for traditional bank issued credit cards because of poor credit, bad credit or no credit at all, try applying for a prepaid debit card. Some prepaid debit cards have a built in credit reporting feature which make it easier for people with bad credit to rebuild their credit histories by reporting their monthly payments to the major credit reporting bureaus.

Intro to Formula One Autosport

In the early 1900’s, F1 Motor Racing originated with unsteady vehicles & older gentleman drivers, but the main Formula One Championship did not start until the nineteen-fifties. As the many years went by & the event developed, it soon became apparent that Formula One Racing was the zenith in motor sport. The racing cars were the speediest, the machinery was the most highly developed & the racing drivers were at the finest of their fitness coming from nations all around the earth.

With the introduction of sponsorship taking part, Formula One Racing took on its more universal form & is at this instant be taken seriously as very, very big business ? with figures reaching millions and even billions of dollars with immense ease. With big success comes politic interest and occasionally it is who you are connected to & how much riches you hold that acquires you what you desire. F1 is matted with conspiracy theorists ? I will declare to being one of them ? but depending on how deep you yearn to get in the F1 society, that side of things is painlessly ignored. What truly matters is what arises on the grand prix race track.

Trekking all over the land for over eight months of the year, F1 Motor Racing stays many different countries large & small, prosperous & deprived, with interesting backdrops, glamorous citizens and stacks of native customs to be soaked up. Covering Friday, Saturday and Sunday, a Formula One weekend is a hard journey, from early testing, to the closing laps of the F1 motor race.

The central structure features a Formula One race every couple of weeks. From time to time the calendar is played with a little bit & there are Formula One races on back-to-back weekends, or sometimes you have to go a handful of weeks before even seeing the household Formula One drivers again. Once it is time for another F1 race, you can observe the news for your favourite Formula 1 team as they arrive at the destination. Friday is made up of practice meetings, Saturday is for qualifying & Sunday is for the main event. How to Use Household Objects to See What’s Underwater

Did you ever wonder whats going on below the surface of a pond or lake?

Here is an easy way to find out:

Materials:

# Paper, pencil, clipboard

# One or more large juice or coffee cans

# Transparent plastic wrap

# Elastic band

# Waterproof tape or duct tape

Preparation:

1. Make a list of every plant and animal you expect to see below the surface

2. Remove the top and bottom of each can

3. For a long tube, tape two or three cans together

4. Cut a piece of plastic wrap so that it is 2-inches larger than the opening at the end of the can

5. Use elastic band to secure plastic wrap around one end of the can or tube

Testing this idea:

1. Take this apparatus and your list to the edge of a pond, stream or lake

2. Kneel down carefully and place the covered end of the can into the water

3. Look through the open end

What did you observe? Did you find what you expected to see? Did you see something you did not expect to see?

What would be different if you did this in spring, summer, autumn?

*In the Northeast USA you might see: minnows, tadpoles, frogs, sunfish, salamanders, garter snakes, crayfish, snails, mayflies - and underwater plants

Passion and Eliminating Your Obstacles for Home Business Success

Gerry Giraffe had just struck out again. Gerry’s abnormal height
was a distinct disadvantage playing baseball because of his
extra high strike zone.

Although Gerry really didn’t care - he wasn’t too passionate
about baseball - he only played it because the other kids did.
The problem was his team had now lost the city championship and
they were all bummed out.

In the locker room after the game Coach Rhino Rhinoceros tried
to comfort his players with the following words of wisdom.

“You lost today and I know you feel bad, but if you take the
following words of wisdom and apply them to your life you will
have more success in life then you ever dreamed of.

I was privileged to know a very famous wise man and right before
he died he shared with me these life-changing revelations I will
share with you now. Revelations so powerful they allowed him to
accomplish anything he desired. They will also work for anybody
who is willing to put forth these principals on a daily basis.

He said, “I have come to observe over the years that the guy who
always got the girl, the promotion, the top position, etc.
almost always had the following character trait. They had
extreme confidence in themselves and what they were doing. They
had an unshakeable power of belief. Jesus Himself Said
“Everything is possible to him who believes.”

Let me ask you the following question, “Is not true belief just
another term for Passion?” When someone believes something
strong enough they develop a true passion for making it happen.
This is what separates just knowing something to be possible and
having a real passion to make it a reality. For instance most
sales people know the more people they talk to the greater their
number of sales will be. But until they develop the passion to
actually start talking to more people their sales will stay the
same.

A golfer can actually know that practice will make his game
better but until they become passionate about improving their
game it won’t improve.

The leading trainers of top athletes and business leaders all
say the same thing.

The best predictor of success is the degree of passion the
person has.

Knowing this is it not possible to build our level of passion -
thus guaranteeing our success. You bet it is.

Knowing this was for me the first step in solving the problem of
how to create anything I wanted in Life.

After all just knowing how to do something and actually being
able to do it are two horses of a different color so to speak.

Next he revealed important secrets that seemed very simple and
yet the majority of people live their whole lives and never
discover these amazing revelations.

This involves solving this problem of “How do we create this
unshakeable self-confidence, the kind of unwavering belief that
moves mountains and allows a person to get the girl and create
for themselves the kind of life that others only dream about.

A hate to ruin the story and give you the last page of the book
here, but the way to achieving unwavering self-confidence and
belief is simply creating a goal of something you have never
done before and than accomplishing that goal. And then doing it
again and again.

Now I’m not going to discuss how to set goals, but here is the
secret of those who accomplish their goals and those who don’t.

Upon defining that goal or goals, write down 20 things on paper
that you believe are items or thoughts, or beliefs that are
currently holding you back from accomplishing your goals.

Next focus on what you consider the top 1-3 limitations that are
holding you back from achieving your goal.

Now here is what I find exciting. Normally a person will have a
couple of major hang-ups (limitations) that are preventing them
from accomplishing their major goals in life. So by eliminating
these limitations you eliminate the vast percentage of all the
road blocks for all of your goals.

The secret I used was to set goals to remove the major
limitations from my life. Once I removed these limitations it
was like being in a race with a bunch of one-legged men.

A Serious Lack of Chemistry

One day, about 15 years ago, I decided to get a tan. I’d never been very good at getting tans. I knew that you had to lie motionless in the sun for long periods of time, but I always found it difficult not to keep getting up and checking my progress in the kitchen mirror. I was quite good at going different shades of red, but I could never quite manage that lovely bronzed look that people in the adverts always seemed to have.

On this particular day, clothed only in swimming trunks and flip flops, and armed with a book and towel, I left my college digs, marched across to the park, and lay down in the sun.

I woke up, and blinked. My God, I was blind. No, no, it was just very bright, silly. My skin felt tight though. Exceedingly tight. I must have been asleep for hours. I rolled up my bits and pieces into my towel, and hobbled back to the flat as quickly as I could. It was a relief to get back indoors, but I was already in serious pain. I stood in front of my bedroom mirror and assessed the damage. The entire front of my body was a startling, humming pink, as though I’d lain face down in fluorescent paint. Even the tiniest of movements caused intense pain. I closed my eyes and groaned. Not only was I in absolute agony, but I looked like a complete dork into the bargain.

We had a healthy turnover of tenants in our college digs. This term’s flatmate was a pretty Chinese girl who spoke very little English. From our previous conversations I knew she was a nurse. Reassured by this, I asked her what I could use to relieve my sunburn. Her face was blank.

‘Do you know if salt is the same thing as bicarbonate of soda?’ I repeated, more slowly and loudly. Blank. She smiled and frowned at the same time.

‘I’ve got sunburn,’ I said, pressing a finger into my chest. The white spot took several seconds to disappear. I looked up. ‘See? Do you know of anything that might help? I’ve heard that getting into a bath of bicarbonate of soda can help.’

‘I sink so. I sorry, I do’ know.’

I smiled at her impoverished but charming English, and went into the bathroom to run the bath. I gauged that the temperature should be somewhere below body temperature so as to provide relief, but not so much so that it would be a shock to the system. I smiled handsomely at her as I walked past her into the kitchen, and again on my way back to the bathroom with the bag of table salt. She smiled too, quizzically.

‘It’s ok,’ I smiled. ‘I think I know what I’m doing.’

She was quite cute, if a bit strait-laced, but I would certainly have cuddled up on the sofa with her if the opportunity ever arose. She said goodbye and closed the door firmly behind her.

With that, I went into the bathroom, still wincing from the slightest movement, poured the entire contents of the bag into the bath, and gave it a good swirl around with my hand. The salt dissolved quite quickly, I noted happily, and I could dive straight in. In I hopped. I gasped with shock and relief. It was colder than I’d hoped, but I quickly got used to it and vigorously set about scrubbing the worst affected areas.

To my disappointment, the bicarbonate of soda solution didn’t seem to be providing the immediate relief I’d hoped for. In fact, if anything, the pain seemed to be getting worse, bizarrely enough.

Then came the Epiphany.

I have never experienced such a sense of freedom in all my life. For one short-lived but blissful moment, I made a profound spiritual connection with my primaeval forebears, and, instinctively tilting my head back to achieve maximum volume, let out a long and bestial howl that must have alerted dogs for miles around.

‘Owwwwwwwwwooooooooooooaaaaaarrrrgh!

I sprang out of the bath, gasping, shivering, and still howling involuntarily, and angrily pulled the plug out.

‘Shit, shit, shit!‘ I shouted at her. How could she not have known that salt was not the same thing as bicarbonate of bloody soda? What the hell kind of nurse was she anyway? Jesus. I was quite literally hopping mad, and in intolerable pain. I needed immediate relief desperately. I trusted my own instincts this time, and quickly filled the bath with cold water and jumped straight in.

‘Shit, shit, shit, shit, SHIT!‘ I shouted at her again, as I jumped out of the bath and danced around the bathroom. The itchy, scratchy, burning pain was so intense that I wanted to be removed from my own skin there and then. I wasn’t worried about fainting, I positively wanted to faint, but I’d never been a good fainter, and had had to endure many an interminable school assembly as a result.

I made myself climb back in, and washed and washed my arms, legs and chest, blaspheming imaginatively as I did so. I might as well have climbed into a bath of boiling water.

Several hours later, still in agony, but no longer in shock, I realised that what I really needed was a bit of sympathy. Gathering all the composure and dignity I could muster, I hobbled bowlegged upstairs in my underwear, tapped sheepishly on my friends’ door and explained what had happened. The pair couldn’t communicate with me or each other for several minutes, so incapacitated were they by laughter.

For the next two or three days I was housebound, could wear nothing but my baggiest underpants, and didn’t get a wink of sleep.

In my next life, I will pay attention in chemistry class.

A Little About Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer affects an estimated one out of every six males. Therefore it’s understandable that most men want to know at least something about prostate cancer, especially as they are approaching their 40s. This article is going to touch on some of the symptoms and treatments, as well as some of the side effects that come from prostate cancer and prostate cancer treatment. This article is not intended to be a substitution for your doctor’s advice, so make sure that you seek a professional opinion if you feel that you may have prostate cancer.

One thing that’s important to note is that you may not suffer any symptoms at all. That is why it’s very important to be checked for prostate cancer frequently, and especially more so as you get older because they can find the prostate cancer before any symptoms show up at all in most cases. Some men that have prostate cancer may experience some of the following symptoms. Frequent or difficult urination, as well as a weak urine flow, erectile dysfunction as well as painful ejaculation and blood in the urine or semen.

There are many different treatment options for prostate cancer and you will want to discuss these with your doctor or healthcare professional before any decision is made. A few of the choices are active surveillance, radiation or hormone therapy, chemotherapy or surgery. There are also other choices and as I said before you should discuss these with your doctor.

One of the best things that you can do for your prostate is to make sure you take care of it in the first place. This may reduce your risk of prostate cancer. Just knowing some simple things such as taking vitamin E, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and being informed about eating fats and red meat can reduce your risk of prostate cancer.

The Answer Is The Question … Asking The Right Questions!

We all have questions about our lives, directions, and destinies. It is the curiosity of the unknown that intrigues us to ask of the future. It is the stress of the present and events of the past that cause us to wish for a future. But, under circumstances and with events that create stresses and distortions, our questions, demands, and wishes can create a future that is specifically implemented to answer our questions.

The future is not written in stone, but is instead etched on a napkin based on the events of the present. When we ask a question, issue a wish, or make a demand of the Universe, it listens closely. It then establishes the path and creates a future for us to receive the necessary answer.

Of course, we only ask questions based on our past experiences. In many cases we ask general, non-specific questions, while in others we are specific of objectives not in line with our desires and vision. We tend to focus on the past to query for a future, which produces yet another path to answer questions for long past events. As we ask, we experience, and we learn. If we don’t learn, then we ask the same questions and live the same experiences.

One of the common questions I hear is, “Why is life so hard?” That question, along with the accompanying thoughts and energies, creates a future to show the hard life, and its reasons, to provide the answer. We experience what we ask and demand. A better question would be, “How do I create a successful life?” This question, with its energies and thoughts, will create a future to show the path to success.

It is not so much that the Universe takes the time to tend to our questions, demands, and wishes. It is the energies that we produce as we think and query that creates the circumstances in our future. To pose the right queries and demands, think of the future and how to get there in the manner you desire — as opposed to considering the past and how to avoid certain events and circumstances.

Past energies are negative with respect to future goals and objectives and they create situations such that cause fears come to fruition. Future energies are positive and they support the abstract space to create the wishes and desires we long for. However, so many are unacquainted with future energies that they immediately worry that a past event is about to occur as a result of a positive future event — this to keep balance. However, true balance is at your fingertips and cuddled in your desires and vision. Expecting to relive past events as predestined balance will create circumstance to relive those events.

Although it is easier to oscillate at a lower energy in a comfort zone than to examine the possibilities of an unknown, yet pliable, future, plan to balance and take control of your life. Define your adjustable future by creating your present. Learn to manifest positive destinies by issuing positive questions and demands of the Universe. Be knowledgeable, be specific, and be direct in your questions and demands as it all comes down to the fact that we truly get what we ask for.

Is Golf Practice All You Need for Lower Scores?

Golf is a very demanding sport, both physically and mentally. Most recreational golfers would love to have a more powerful swing and lower their handicaps. Good instruction from a teaching pro and practice of what you’ve learned can help lower your scores. There is however, more to achieving consistent improvement. It’s great to go to the driving range and practice. Unfortunately, sometimes you’re further embedding the wrong movement patterns into your swing.

To achieve the most from your instruction and practice time, there is another segment of your game that should be constantly evaluated. While it is receiving more attention of late, there’s still many avid golfers that don’t include this important factor into their strategy. What’s the secret?

One of the best ways to achieve and maintain overall improvement on the course is to perform a golf fitness routine on a regular basis. This can do wonders to improve power and consistency. Strength, balance, and flexibility play a major role in the effectiveness of your golf swing. I’m not talking about body building, but rather simply toning and conditioning your body for the movements required during a round of golf.

The golf swing places complex demands on the body. There must be mental concentration, neuromuscular coordination, balance, and muscular strength and flexibility all functioning at the same time during the few seconds it takes to make your swing. Most teaching professionals will admit one of the major reasons their students don’t progress to the next level of play is due to lack of muscular strength and flexibility.

By conditioning your body using what’s called the principles of functional training for golf, you can prepare your body for every movement required on the course. Functional fitness is designed to mimic the movements of the golf swing. All the components required for an effective golf swing can be improved. So, instead of hitting thousands of golf balls on the driving range, why not tone up the fuel for your golf club…your body. You’ll not only improve your performance on the course, you’ll be better conditioned for the demands of daily life.

The Life Cycle of Science

“There was a time when the newspapers said that only twelve men understood the theory of relativity. I do not believe that there ever was such a time… On the other hand, I think it is safe to say that no one understands quantum mechanics… Do not keep saying to yourself, if you can possibly avoid it, ‘But how can it be like that?’, because you will get ‘down the drain’ into a blind alley from which nobody has yet escaped. Nobody knows how it can be like that.”
R. P. Feynman (1967)

“The first processes, therefore, in the effectual studies of the sciences, must be ones of simplification and reduction of the results of previous investigations to a form in which the mind can grasp them.”
J. C. Maxwell, On Faraday’s lines of force

” …conventional formulations of quantum theory, and of quantum field theory in particular, are unprofessionally vague and ambiguous. Professional theoretical physicists ought to be able to do better. Bohm has shown us a way.”
John S. Bell, Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics

“It would seem that the theory [quantum mechanics] is exclusively concerned about ‘results of measurement’, and has nothing to say about anything else. What exactly qualifies some physical systems to play the role of ‘measurer’? Was the wavefunction of the world waiting to jump for thousands of millions of years until a single-celled living creature appeared? Or did it have to wait a little longer, for some better qualified system … with a Ph.D.? If the theory is to apply to anything but highly idealized laboratory operations, are we not obliged to admit that more or less ‘measurement-like’ processes are going on more or less all the time, more or less everywhere. Do we not have jumping then all the time?

The first charge against ‘measurement’, in the fundamental axioms of quantum mechanics, is that it anchors the shifty split of the world into ’system’ and ‘apparatus’. A second charge is that the word comes loaded with meaning from everyday life, meaning which is entirely inappropriate in the quantum context. When it is said that something is ‘measured’ it is difficult not to think of the result as referring to some pre-existing property of the object in question. This is to disregard Bohr’s insistence that in quantum phenomena the apparatus as well as the system is essentially involved. If it were not so, how could we understand, for example, that ‘measurement’ of a component of ‘angular momentum’ … in an arbitrarily chosen direction … yields one of a discrete set of values? When one forgets the role of the apparatus, as the word ‘measurement’ makes all too likely, one despairs of ordinary logic … hence ‘quantum logic’. When one remembers the role of the apparatus, ordinary logic is just fine.

In other contexts, physicists have been able to take words from ordinary language and use them as technical terms with no great harm done. Take for example the ’strangeness’, ‘charm’, and ‘beauty’ of elementary particle physics. No one is taken in by this ‘baby talk’… Would that it were so with ‘measurement’. But in fact the word has had such a damaging effect on the discussion, that I think it should now be banned altogether in quantum mechanics.”
J. S. Bell, Against “Measurement”

“Is it not clear from the smallness of the scintillation on the screen that we have to do with a particle? And is it not clear, from the diffraction and interference patterns, that the motion of the particle is directed by a wave? De Broglie showed in detail how the motion of a particle, passing through just one of two holes in screen, could be influenced by waves propagating through both holes. And so influenced that the particle does not go where the waves cancel out, but is attracted to where they co-operate. This idea seems to me so natural and simple, to resolve the wave-particle dilemma in such a clear and ordinary way, that it is a great mystery to me that it was so generally ignored.”
J. S. Bell, Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics

“…in physics the only observations we must consider are position observations, if only the positions of instrument pointers. It is a great merit of the de Broglie-Bohm picture to force us to consider this fact. If you make axioms, rather than definitions and theorems, about the “measurement” of anything else, then you commit redundancy and risk inconsistency.”
J. S. Bell, Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics

“To outward appearance, the modern world was born of an anti religious movement: man becoming self-sufficient and reason supplanting belief. Our generation and the two that preceded it have heard little of but talk of the conflict between science and faith; indeed it seemed at one moment a foregone conclusion that the former was destined to take the place of the latter… After close on two centuries of passionate struggles, neither science nor faith has succeeded in discrediting its adversary.
On the contrary, it becomes obvious that neither can develop normally without the other. And the reason is simple: the same life animates both. Neither in its impetus nor its achievements can science go to its limits without becoming tinged with mysticism and charged with faith.”
Pierre Thierry de Chardin, “The Phenomenon of Man”

I opened this appendix with lengthy quotations by John S. Bell, the main proponent of the Bohemian Mechanics interpretation of Quantum Mechanics (really, an alternative rather than an interpretation). The renowned physicist, David Bohm (in the 50s), basing himself on work done much earlier by de Broglie (the unwilling father of the wave-particle dualism), embedded the Schrdinger Equation (SE throughout this article) in a deterministic physical theory which postulated a non-Newtonian motion of particles.

This is a fine example of the life cycle of scientific theories, comprised of three phases: Growth, Transitional Pathology, and Ossification.

Witchcraft, Religion, Alchemy and Science succeeded one another and each such transition was characterized by transitional pathologies reminiscent of psychotic disorders. The exceptions are (arguably) medicine and biology. A phenomenology of ossified bodies of knowledge would make a fascinating read.

Science is currently in its Ossification Phase. It is soon to be succeeded by another discipline or magisterium. Other explanations to the current state of science should be rejected: that human knowledge is limited by its very nature, that the world is inherently incomprehensible, that methods of thought and understanding tend to self-organize to form closed mythic systems and that there is a problem with the language which we employ to make our inquiries of the world describable and communicable.

Kuhn’s approach to Scientific Revolutions is but one of many to issues of theory and paradigm shifts in scientific thought and its resulting evolution. Scientific theories seem to be subject to a process of natural selection very much as organisms are in nature.

Animals could be thought of as theorems (with a positive truth value) in the logical system “Nature”. But species become extinct because nature itself changes (not nature as a set of potentials - but the relevant natural phenomena to which the species are exposed). Could we say the same about scientific theories? Are they being selected and deselected partly due to a changing, shifting backdrop?

Indeed, the whole debate between “realists” and “anti-realists” in the philosophy of Science can be settled by adopting this single premise: that the Universe itself is not immutable. By contrasting the fixed subject of study (”The World”) with the transient nature of Science - anti-realists gained the upper hand.

Arguments such as the under-determination of theories by data and the pessimistic meta-inductions from past falsity (of scientific “knowledge”) emphasize the transience and asymptotic nature of the fruits of the scientific endeavor. But such arguments rest on the implicit assumption that there is some universal, invariant, truth out there (which science strives to asymptotically approximate). This apparent problematic evaporates if we allow that both the observer and the observed, the theory and its subject, are alterable.

Science develops through reduction of miracles. Laws of nature are formulated. They are assumed to encompass all the (relevant) natural phenomena (that is, phenomena governed by natural forces and within nature). Ex definitio, nothing can exist outside nature - it is all-inclusive and all-pervasive, or omnipresent (formerly the attributes of the divine).

Supernatural forces, supernatural intervention, are contradictions in terms, oxymorons. If some thing or force exists - it is natural. That which is supernatural - does not exist. Miracles do not only contravene (or violate) the laws of nature - they are impossible, not only physically, but also logically. That which is logically possible and can be experienced (observed), is physically possible.

But, again, we are faced with the assumption of a “fixed background”. What if nature itself changes in ways that are bound to confound ever-truer knowledge? Then, the very shifts of nature as a whole, as a system, could be called “supernatural” or “miraculous”.

In a way, this is how science evolves. A law of nature is proposed or accepted. An event occurs or an observation made which are not described or predicted by it. It is, by definition, a violation of the suggested or accepted law which is, thus, falsified. Subsequently and consequently, the laws of nature are modified, or re-written entirely, in order to reflect and encompass this extraordinary event. Result: Hume’s comforting distinction between “extraordinary” and “miraculous” events is upheld (the latter being ruled out).

Extraordinary events can be compared to previous experience - miraculous events entail some supernatural interference with the normal course of things (a “wonder” in Biblical terms). It is by confronting the extraordinary and eliminating its “abnormal” or “supernatural” attributes that science progresses as a miraculous activity. This, of course, is not the view of the likes of David Deutsch (see his book, “The Fabric of Reality”).

Back to the last phase of this Life Cycle, to Ossification. The discipline degenerates and, following the “psychotic” transitional phase, it sinks into a paralytic state which is characterized by the following:

All the practical and technological aspects of the dying discipline are preserved and continue to be utilized. Gradually the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings vanish or are replaced by the tenets and postulates of a new discipline - but the inventions, processes and practical know-how do not evaporate. They are incorporated into the new discipline and, in time, are erroneously attributed to it, marking it as the legitimate successor of the now defunct, preceding discipline.

The practitioners of the old discipline confine themselves to copying and replicating the various aspects of the old discipline, mainly its intellectual property (writings, inventions, other theoretical material). This replication does not lead to the creation of new knowledge or even to the dissemination of old one. It is a hermetic process, limited to the ever decreasing circle of the initiated. Special institutions govern the rehashing of the materials related to the old discipline, their processing and copying. Institutions related to the dead discipline are often financed and supported by the state which is always an agent of conservation, preservation and conformity.

Thus, the creative-evolutionary dimension of the now-dead discipline is gone. No new paradigms or revolutions happen. The exegesis and replication of canonical writings become the predominant activities. Formalisms are not subjected to scrutiny and laws assume eternal, immutable, quality.

All the activities of the adherents of the old discipline become ritualized. The old discipline itself becomes a pillar of the extant power structures and, as such, is condoned and supported by them. The old discipline’s practitioners synergistically collaborate with the powers that be: with the industrial base, the military complex, the political elite, the intellectual cliques in vogue. Institutionalization inevitably leads to the formation of a (mostly bureaucratic) hierarchy.

Emerging rituals serve the purpose of diverting attention from subversive, “forbidden” thinking. These rigid ceremonies are reminiscent of obsessive-compulsive disorders in individuals who engage in ritualistic behavior patterns to deflect “wrong” or “corrupt” thoughts.

Practitioners of the old discipline seek to cement the power of its “clergy”. Rituals are a specialized form of knowledge which can be obtained only by initiation (”rites of passage”). One’s status in the hierarchy of the dead discipline is not the result of objectively quantifiable variables or even of judgment of merit. It is the outcome of politics and other power-related interactions.

The need to ensure conformity leads to doctrinarian dogmatism and to the establishment of enforcement mechanisms. Dissidents are subjected to both social and economic sanctions. They find themselves ex-communicated, harassed, imprisoned, tortured, their works banished or not published, ridiculed and so on.

This is really the triumph of text over the human spirit. At this late stage in the Life Cycle, the members of the old discipline’s community are oblivious to the original reasons and causes for their pursuits. Why was the discipline developed in the first place? What were the original riddles, questions, queries it faced and tackled? Long gone are the moving forces behind the old discipline. Its cold ashes are the texts and their preservation is an expression of longing and desire for things past.

The vacuum left by the absence of positive emotions is filled by negative ones. The discipline and its disciples become phobic, paranoid, defensive, and with a faulty reality test. Devoid of the ability to generate new, attractive content, the old discipline resorts to motivation by manipulation of negative emotions. People are frightened, threatened, herded, cajoled. The world is painted in an apocalyptic palette as ruled by irrationality, disorderly, chaotic, dangerous, or even lethal. Only the old discipline stands between its adherents and apocalypse.

New, emerging disciplines, are presented as heretic, fringe lunacies, inconsistent, reactionary and bound to regress humanity to some dark ages. This is the inter-disciplinary or inter-paradigm clash. It follows the Psychotic Phase. The old discipline resorts to some transcendental entity (God, Satan, or the conscious intelligent observer in the Copenhagen interpretation of the formalism of Quantum Mechanics). In this sense, the dying discipline is already psychotic and afoul of the test of reality. It develops messianic aspirations and is inspired by a missionary zeal and zest. The fight against new ideas and theories is bloody and ruthless and every possible device is employed.

But the very characteristics of the older nomenclature is in the old discipline’s disfavor. It is closed, based on ritualistic initiation, and patronizing. It relies on intimidation. The numbers of the faithful dwindle the more the “church” needs them and the more it resorts to oppressive recruitment tactics. The emerging discipline wins by default. Even the initiated, who stand most to lose, finally abandon the old discipline. Their belief unravels when confronted with the truth value, explanatory and predictive powers, and the comprehensiveness of the emerging discipline.

This, indeed, is the main presenting symptom, the distinguishing hallmark, of paralytic old disciplines. They deny reality. They are rendered mere belief-systems, myths. They require the suspension of judgment and disbelief, the voluntary limitation of one’s quest for truth and beauty, the agreement to leave swathes of the map in a state of “terra incognita”. This reductionism, this schizoid avoidance, the resort to hermeticism and transcendental authority mark the beginning of the end.
