Physical tells are fairly reliable, because most often, they are involuntary. With all that’s at stake in poker, players tend to get excited about what’s going on in front of them. You can’t hear a player’s heart speed up or what’s going on in his head, but you can see how he’s breathing.
Oftentimes you’ll notice a player start to breath heavily, or even hold his breath. If you notice a change in someone’s breathing, you’re halfway to figuring out his hand. They main thing to know is that a player with a good hand is likely to get excited and start breathing faster. If you notice a player speed up his breathing, then you may want to reconsider the value of your hand.
A player who’s mindful of this will make an effort to regulate their breathing, slowing it down or even holding in. If you notice a player breathing especially slowly or awkwardly trying to hide the fact that he’s holding his breath, give him a strange look as you fold your hand.
