Memories of Our First Soccer Uniforms

It doesn’t matter who you are, where you grew up or what you do for a living now, everyone remembers the first time that they put on their very first soccer uniforms. Whether it was for a sports team or a fan club, there is a certain magic that you will always associate with that very first moment when you became part of an integral, emblem wearing member of an organization. In my case, my first memories are of soccer uniforms.

It was during summer holidays, while staying with my grandparents, that I first went to soccer camp in a Gordon Internationalsoccer uniform. Of course, my grandparents were just trying to get rid of my brother and me for a few hours in the afternoons, but to us, it was a magical adventure. And one with all the trappings of a knightly quest.

First, we had the experience of meeting our fellow knights and falling into the easy rivalry of young children. Then, there were the hours of technical training. Like true knights of old, learning sword-craft, we were tutored in the use of our feet and our minds. The running alone was enough to guarantee quiet summer nights for our grandparents as my brother and I snoozed away, dreaming of the next day’s conquests.

One afternoon, there was an old film of arguably the world’s greatest soccer legend, Pelé. Even in black and white, the soccer uniforms of the Brazilian team stood out in brilliant contrast to those of their adversaries. And then, finally, the day came, and we were presented with our very own soccer uniforms. We had come as individuals, but after hours of working together, we were a team. And what a team!! We lost our first 4 games and tied the fifth.
