Playing Mediocre Starting Poker Hands
I have long written about the folly of playing mediocre starting poker hands on a regular basis, but what do you do when you do play such a hand and flop something great to it? Let’s say you’ve got A-6 offsuit in the small blind. Not a poker hand you would normally play, but no one raises before you, you’re already partially committed to the pot, so you decide to see a cheap flop. Then the flop comes out 6-Q-6. Well, now you’re in business. I have been an advocate of usually checking if you flop trips, to bait other players into putting chips in the pot. Especially in a case such as the above, if 4 or 5 people limped into the pot. The odds are that one or two people will make some play at the pot. When you are in a poker hand like this, where you are in a blind and see a cheap flop and hot a great hand, it almost feels like free money. The key in this situation is to get paid off as much as possible. That’s why I’d check, and simply call if someone bets. I may even check again on the turn, and cold call if someone bets again. Then lead off with a decent sized bet on the river, Usually, that type of strategy will work.
