I am so confused about the different breeds of dogs there are these days. Recently I found out about these teacup sized dogs because a few celebrities have them and take them with them everywhere. While I thought that would be so much fun to have a small dog that I could take with me everywhere I did not like the hairless breeds that I saw. Then after a little research I found that there are teacup poodle puppies that have hair and are still, well, the size of a teacup. I think that I will get one of these and take it with me everywhere too.

I have always bought a more expensive brand of food for my dog because I heard that it helps to eliminate waste. While I do care about what kind of food my dogs are eating I was not too worried about it because I bought the higher quality stuff. So You Have A Picky Eater?

If you have a picky eater, mealtime can make you feel like you want to pull your hair out. It is very frustrating for parents to watch their child only fiddle with their food at dinner or not even touch it, claiming they “don’t like it.” Then what happens? Thirty minutes later guess who is hungry? You guessed it. Your little picky eater.

Jamie’s mother was concerned about Jamie’s lack of interest in food. She stated, “Jamie never wants to eat anything I fix for dinner. What can I do to encourage Jamie to eat the meals that I have prepared?” I came up with the following ten tips for her. You may find them useful as well.

TIP: INVOLVE JAMIE. You could have Jamie help with planning the menu or meal preparation. Kids are less likely to “turn up their nose” at something, they had a hand in.

TIP: PLACE A LIMIT ON JAMIE. Perhaps Jamie is playing with her food at dinner and not real interested in eating it. Mom say’s, “Jamie, I will be serving breakfast at 7:00 a.m. try to eat enough to make it to then. You decide how much you will need. Oh! We will be clearing the table in _____ minutes.”

When Jamie comes to you later that evening complaining of being hungry. With an understanding tone, simply remind her that you will be serving breakfast at 7:00 a.m. as usual. Jamie will most likely be persistent about getting something else to eat. It is important that you follow through with the limit you have placed. Otherwise, Jamie learns that you do not mean what you say and you lose your credibility with her. You may have to tell her several times that you will be “serving breakfast at 7:00″ until she realizes that your are not going to give in.

Jamie: “Mom I’m hungry. Can I have some cookies?”

Mom: “Kids who eat all their dinner are welcome to have a snack after.”

Jamie: “But mom I’m really hungry.”

Mom: “I know Jamie. I would be hungry too if I ate as little as you did for dinner, but don’t worry I will be fixing a big breakfast at 7:00 a.m.”

Jamie: “What? Do you want me to starve?”

Mom: “I’ll be serving breakfast at 7:00 Jamie”

Jamie: “This isn’t fair.”

Mom: “I’ll be serving breakfast at 7:00 Jamie”

Jamie: “Fine!”

TIP: NOTICE THE EXCEPTIONS. Call attention to the times when Jamie eats most of her meal. “Wow! Jamie you ate everything on your plate. Good job. You should be proud of yourself.” Too often, we only notice the negative aspects of our children’s behavior and that is what we reinforce with our negative attention.

TIP: CATER TO JAMIE’S DESIRE TO BE “BIG”. ” You probably won’t like this halibut Jamie. Usually, adults are the only ones who like halibut.” Guess what may just become Jamie’s new favorite food?

TIP: PROVIDE VARIOUS CHOICES AROUND MEALTIME. “Would you rather sit by me or by mommy?” “You can eat with a fork or a spoon which would you prefer?” “Do you think you will need more potatoes or is that enough?” “Have as much as you think you will need to make it to dinner.” “Milk or juice?” “Should we eat at 7:00 or 7:30?”

TIP: BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL. “You know dear, although spaghetti is not my favorite, I will eat it because I know how hard you worked to make it.”

TIP: EXPOSURE. Encourage Jamie to try a variety of foods early on in her life before she knows any different. Some children may have never thought liver was gross if it hadn’t been for what someone else had set their expectation to be.

TIP: PROVIDE SOME FLEXIBILITY. Let’s remember there are some foods that certain children just can not stomach. If Jamie has a problem with spinach but it is part of that particular meal, try to have other items that she can get her fill up on once everyone has their share. However, this should be the exception rather than the rule.

Try letting Jamie dip her foods in sauces, dressings, syrups or ketchup. It may make them taste better to her.

TIP: MAKE MEALTIME ENJOYABLE. Try to talk about things other than eating at mealtime. Dinner is a great time to talk to Jamie about how her day went. During breakfast, you could discuss what everyone has planned for the day.

Everyone pitching in to help prepare the meal can teach Jamie an important family value. An added bonus for children is that it can teach them important thinking skills regarding timing, measuring, colors, comparisons, counting, and cause and effect.

Be creative in the ways that you dish up Jamie’s food. Mold her mashed potatoes into a volcano, cut her meat or sandwich into bite sized pieces and poke toothpicks in them, layout veggies in the shapes of letters or numbers, or use a drop or two of food coloring to make it more interesting.

TIP: LIMIT SNACKING. For children to be hungry enough to eat a meal they usually need to go two or three hours without food. However, it is difficult for children to go from noon to 6:00 p.m. without food. A nutritious snack after school should be fine to get Jamie to dinner still having her appetite.

TIP: RECALL PAST SUCCESSES. Think back about times when Jamie has ate her meals. What were you doing? Were you placing a lot of emphasis on her need to eat her food? What was she doing? What were you eating? What happened before the meal? These kinds of questions may help you realize some of the things you or Jamie is already doing which assist her in becoming a better eater.

Parenting Your Teenager: Universal Laws for Blending Families

Q: I’ve never written a letter like this before because I’ve never been faced with a situation like this before. I’m getting married soon for the second time and have two kids that I’m bringing to the marriage, plus, my wife to be has two kids as well, and we want to have kids of our own. We’ve read that second marriages have an 80% chance of failure, due in part to trying to bring two different families together. We are both nervous and scared, and want to do this right. Any suggestions would be really, really appreciated.

One of the things that tells me you have a good chance of being a family that beats the odds is that you are thinking about this ahead of time. Most people just sort of stumble into these things, making it up as they go along.

With that in mind, here’s a few suggestions called “the universal laws for blending families.”

The Law of -Ing

The law of -ing refers to a misnomer in the way we talk about this special kind of family. By calling them “blended families” we imply that blending two families together is a one time event, and all the work is done. Nothing could be further from the truth. “Blending families” is a much more accurate term, because it implies that putting two families together is a life long process, with lots of work to do.

The Law of Brady

Let’s get this one out of the way right now. The Brady Bunch was a TV show, complete with scripts so everyone knew what was coming in advance, with as many takes as necessary to get it right. Blending a family together is real world stuff. And it’s all live!

The Law of Pace

Allow your new family to develop and set it’s own pace. Don’t try to force relationships or closeness.

The Law of Instant Love

Related to the law of pace, the law of instant love states that you cannot realistically expect “instant love” to occur between siblings and children and adults. Love and relationships take time.

The Law of Magnification

In many of the blending families that I have worked with, at first it feels like everyone is walking on egg shells. Walking on egg shells makes it feel like every little issue is a huge deal, on which rides the success or failure of the family. Watching out for this law can help you keep things in perspective.

The Law of Loyalty

I’ve yet to work with a family where this wasn’t eventually a very powerful issue. Just consider the situation above. We’ve got four kids, all in various stages of recovering from the trauma of divorce or perhaps death, coming together in to a new family, and developing new relationships and loyalties. Yet they still have loyalties to the previous families. This is hard enough for adults to figure out, much less children.

It’s like what a 10 year old boy in a family I once worked with said, “How can I love Daddy and Jim (step-father) at the same time?”

The Law of Permission

Here’s one answer to the loyalty dilemma. As much as possible, even though it can be incredibly difficult, it’s crucial that kids have permission from as many of the

adults as possible, to form new and loving ties with members of the new family.

A parent once told me they didn’t like the word step because it implied less of a connection between the family members. As this father put it, “While I am not the biological father of two of our children, I am a father and dad to them. And they may be the biological children of my wife, but they are also my children.”

Foster Parents Do Make a Difference in the Lives of Foster Children

Judith Viorst, in her best seller “Necessary Losses”, discusses how we are forced to grow beyond the losses that are an inevitable and necessary part of life. For children forced into the child welfare system, the loss was necessary for their own well being and safety. These children had to be temporarily or sometimes permanently removed from their biological environment due to neglect, abandonment or abuse.

Foster parents are wonderful people empowered with the courage and fortitude to open up their hearts and homes to foster children. They understand that becoming a foster parent is a special mission or calling requiring the ability to be a guiding and supporting influence on young hurting souls. They realize that there is absolutely no alternative equal to another family environment when children, through no fault of their own and for whatever reason, can no longer live with their biological families and they have willingly stepped up to the challenge of making a difference in the life of a child.

I both admire and salute all foster parents because foster parenting is a demanding commitment. Not only are they required to acknowledge the bereft foster child’s difficult emotions when first placed in their home, integrate the child into their family, teach the child the family’s rules and rituals, routines and expectations, engender feelings of safety and security, but they are also required to work cooperatively in efforts to reunify the child with his/her birth family and so much more.

Yet, I believe there is such a wondrous power in the gift of human love and compassion. New life emerges in hearts of hurting children longing for unconditional love, tenderness, compassion, patience, understanding and hope. When foster parents reach out and lovingly touch a child, they infuse something priceless of themselves into the very soul and essence of another. When they touch a child in empathetic, kind, gentle, healing ways, they may be incognizant of the lasting impressions they are imprinting upon the child’s mind screen with each loving word, gentle embrace, and warm encouragement.

The power of love and compassion is awesome. There is something subtle, magnetic; redemptive that mysteriously transmits to the child in a positive, healthy and permanent way. It is the ministry of healing; the most lasting and meaningful kind of human touches. It is the silent, holy, and powerful contagion of a foster parent’s influence.

Literally thousands of lives have been positively affected by foster parents who have volunteered their homes, their lives, and selves to these children. As a former foster child myself, I can attest to the sustaining power that an understanding look or warm embrace can have on crushed spirits. I know what a loving foster home environment is. It is more than just a place to sleep comfortably and it is more than wiping away sad tears, but it is a refuge from the world of chaos. Foster Parents do make a difference.

If you have not thought about it before, “now is the acceptable time” to consider becoming a foster parent. You remember what Jesus said in the gospel of Mark?

“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” Mark 9:37.

People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them. Mark 10:13-16.
